As a Painter, Printmaker, Performance Artist, Muralist and Educator, artist Lorraine Maxwell has a keen understanding of the role that Art plays in living a healthy life and sees herself as one who encourages others to think creatively.
Born in Jamaica, WI, Maxwell has travelled and lived in the West Indies, Europe and the U.S. Her art is influenced by the mix of cultures that she has experienced as well as the human emotions which connect us all.
Focusing on art that benefits the community, Maxwell has worked with teens, children and adults to create numerous murals in Broward County and has done many outreach programs in South Florida communities aimed at uniting people and bringing a fresh way of looking at art to new and diverse audiences.
Maxwell has taught Art, Art History, Art Appreciation and Crafting, part-time, for The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department for over twenty years and has also taught Lifelong Learning Institute Art Classes at Nova Southeastern University as well as giving private art workshops and lessons.
Maxwell has a BFA from Boston University, has received the STAR Award from ArtServe for Community Service in the Arts, The Sunflower Award for Service in the Arts to Children and the Community and has had numerous one person and group shows. Her work is in many national and international private collections and she has maintained a studio in Fort Lauderdale, FL, for more than 25 years.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My art is distilled into the things that interest me most: color, light and the combination of different media. My pieces are tied together by color, fanciful images and more color.
